ONOMICHI U2

A cyclist-friendly complex on the Onomichi waterfront

ONOMICHI U2 transformed a former port warehouse into a multi-use facility designed for the cyclists who flock to Onomichi, at the northern Honshu side of the Shimanami Kaido bridge network to Shikoku. The facility is laid out like a small town inside a city, featuring a hotel, restaurant with seasonal Setouchi delicacies, bar, café, bakery, lifestyle shop and professional bicycle shop.

A Small Town Inside a City

Onomichi is a beautiful hillside town surrounded by the sea and mountains. The interior of ONOMICHI U2, a renovated port warehouse, has an open layout containing small stores and lanes, encouraging spontaneous interaction between visitors and staff. The primary materials of wood, stone, and steel evoke Onomichi’s traditional wooden houses and thriving shipbuilding industry. Hotel rooms are decorated with denim fabrics and a patterned fabric known as Bingo-gasuri, both products of local industry, while the corridors are designed to resemble engawa verandas. These details all convey a sense of Onomichi’s local character. The restaurant offers grilled dishes made with fresh ingredients from the Seto Inland Sea, as well as seasonal wild game dishes. The marketplace offers a variety of goods and apparel made for daily life, as well as vegetables direct from local farms, linking and promoting local culture.
