guntû

“Setouchi, Drifting.”

guntû departs from its home port in Onomichi, Hiroshima, and slowly sails around the Seto Inland Sea, as far west as Kaminoseki in Yamaguchi, and as far east as Shodoshima in Kagawa. A serene guntû voyage invites you to enjoy the slow pace of time, while feeling at one with the ever-changing seasons and scenery of the Seto Inland Sea.

The name guntû comes from the word in the local dialect for a species of small crab that lives in the Seto Inland Sea.

The ship’s name expresses our hope that guntû is beloved as part of Setouchi just like this creature, sharing the richness of the region’s traditions, culture, and natural beauty with our guests and local people.

Setouchi scenery melds nature and culture

The Seto Inland Sea, surrounded by three of Japan’s main islands, contains some 700 islands.

Designated as Japan’s first national park, Setouchi’s unique scenery and local climate emerges from the combination of its magnificent sea, the beauty of its many islands, and the vibrant industries sustained by the people who live and work in the region.

Before the improvement of land transport routes, the Seto Inland Sea was a vital transportation corridor for travelers and culture from far and wide. The ports where ships waited for favorable tides and wind developed unique cultures from the interaction of local regions and maritime influences, which have been passed down through the centuries.
guntû continues to voyage across the waters of five prefectures, playing a role to connect and preserve the modest cultures of Setouchi for the next generation.
